Yahoo! Announces Feature To Send Driving Directions To Mobile Phones

BY: Ed Hardy, Brighthand.com Editor
PUBLISHED: 2/16/2005

When running out the door you always grab your wallet, keys, phone and, epecially if you are going somewhere new, driving directions. Now you cn shorten that list by making your phone multi-task for you. Starting today consumers can go to Yahoo! Maps and click the "Send to Phone" link on the driving directions page to send the full, step-by-step directions directly to their phone.

After sending the driving directions to their phone, consumers receive a message with a link taking them directly to the full turn-by-turn driving directions. This new functionally builds on the successful implementation of the "Send to Phone" feature in Yahoo! Local for contact information and addresses for local businesses, as well as the launch of Yahoo! Search for Mobile across several major U.S. carriers late last year.

This new service is available across most major wireless carriers - Cingular/AT&T Wireless, Sprint/Nextel and T-Mobile, at no charge for consumers. However, carriers may charge fees based on consumers' data plans.

Currently almost half of mobile phone subscribers use data services and 79% of total U.S. Yahoo! site users own a mobile phone - making it possible for Yahoo! to offer convenient, new functionalities to consumers and take Yahoo! on the go. Yahoo! is the No. 1 Internet destination worldwide, the top website accessed via the wireless internet (Telephia, 8/04) and the No. 1 destination for people looking for local information online (NNR).
